Protect a workstation from viruses without 3rd party software

Protect a workstation from viruses without 3rd party software

I have a Windows 7 audiostation that I want to keep uncluttered from
unnecessary software. However I need an active internet connection.
Anti-virus software will bring its performance down, so I currently have
it hooked up to a second workstation (Windows 7 - via crossover cable,
loaded with Norton security). Is my Audiostation reasonably secure within
this setup?
I can't find any resources to explain whether or not the internet
connection is filtered before reaching my Audiostation. Is there a better
way of handling this issue?
